HERMESS Measurement Technology

For rocket and missile systems, HERMESS is the technology that makes compact flight load measurement systems for in-flight data possible, without relying on simplifying models for the flight structure geometry.

By providing accurate flight loading data, we want to help reduce unnecessary factors of safety and create more economic rocket and missile systems that enable cheap access to space or lead to high-performance systems.

We develop a flight load measurement system that provides live and exact in-flight strain and load data, and also carry out the calibration and data evaluation tailored to the specific structure for best data accuracy. HERMESS is the scalable and flexible tool that supplies R&D departments with precise measurement data for structural optimization and lightweighting of flight systems.

Technological Concept

The application of strain gauges and temperature sensors inside the flight structure generates the thermally decoupled strain data. These are received, stored and processed for transmission via telemetry in the self-developed processor unit. The arrangement of HERMESS measurement technology is based on the shape of the flight structure and can be scaled and flexibly applied at the desired position.

The exact calibration of the structure in the run-up to the flight provides the relationship between the strains and flight loads, which applies to the concrete structure together with all irregularities, without using simplifying models for the geometry. The data obtained is therefore extremely precise and significantly exceeds modeling assumptions currently in use, so that a real basis for action is possible concerning structural optimization according to the now precisely known flight loads.

What makes us stand out...

The common procedures for the analysis or prediction of structural loads correspond to those of an analytical investigation of the problem or the application of a suitable simulation program. Both approaches are based on different models and make certain assumptions and simplifications depending on the required accuracy of the results. To ensure the required accuracy of the results, however, the models on which they are based require comprehensive validation, which is only possible to a limited extent due to the small number of real experimental data, especially in the case of the rocket flight application. The real material behaviour can therefore deviate considerably from the theoretical predictions under certain circumstances. Furthermore, these investigation methods allow only limited consideration of irregularities in the investigated structure.
HERMESS meets these challenges and contributes to the improvement of the above mentioned methods with experimental investigations of structural loads using an alternative approach for data acquisition and analysis.

The structural response is measured exactly through a calibration of the flight structure with the integrated measurement technology. A simplifying model for the material behavior is therefore not used on this level for the most part. Irregularities in the examined structure are taken into account.

Outreach

The main goal of our outreach approach is to get public attention on the project and awake the general interest in space-related topics and projects, in particular concerning REXUS/BEXUS. Therefore, we are planning on making the project as public as possible. We divided our way of working into four different parts with different aims and strategies.
